Military & Defence
Renfrew County has a proud history in the military and defence sector, anchored with Garrison Petawawa. Garrison Petawawa was established in 1905 as the Petawawa Military Camp and has since grown to be Canada’s Largest Army base, home to the 4th Canadian Division Support Base.
Within the 4th Canadian Division Support are the following Formation and Lodger Units:
- 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group
- The Canadian Special Operations Regiment
- 1 Canadian Field Hospital
- 450 Tactical Helicopter Squadron
- 427 Special Operations Aviation Squadron
- As well as a number of other supporting units
Garrison Petawawa employs approximately 7,000 people, comprised of military personnel, civilian support personnel and contractor and construction employees working on site.
With the ongoing military needs for new, upgraded and maintenance of equipment, machinery and armaments, as well as for on the ground testing, a wide variety of military and defence industry businesses have come to know and spend time at Garrison Petawawa. A number of military and defence sector businesses have also grown organically, born through research and synergies with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories.
Some of Renfrew County’s Military and Defence companies include Pacific Safety Products (PSP), Med-Eng, Bubble Technology Industries (BTI) and Raytheon Canada.
With Renfrew County being home to Garrison Petawawa, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, and existing aerospace manufacturers, as well as our proximity to the City of Ottawa, our region is an ideal location for investment with the Military and Defence Sector Industries.
